Totentanz 1

Christine Zohner: Totentanz 1 / III, 120 x 90 cm, Oil on canvas, 2009

The paintings from Christine Zohner often suggest a narration, although they remain completely abstract and non referential. This is because they contain emotion and feeling that at the first moment asks of the viewer an explanation. More time with the paintings leaves me content to accept that the meaning is separate from the image and should remain so. The emotional content is a result of dramatic color composition that is expressively placed on the surface. The paintings are neither gestural, nor sentimental, rather they seek an integration of these personal expressive aspects of what painting has been for many years and gives an intimate insight into contemporary existence.
